“Well, that was pointless,” Daniel said as they left the power-core division.

The interview with the supervisor had gone as Michael expected. Sir, how is your day going? Fine? Check that question off the system’s list. Has there been any unplanned maintenance performed recently? Check. They were all the questions a sentinel would have asked. In truth, Michael didn’t know what he would have changed. They were all logical questions. But the list was too rigid in its logic. Too restrictive. Whoever was doing all this was not following the rules. It was difficult to catch someone who was willing to break the rules by only thinking within the boundaries.

They traveled down an elevator to level six, then walked through the air-filtration plant and down a flight of stairs to the residential section of that level. They needed to find the man called Cade, and just as the system predicted, he was returning from the communal meal. Cade worked shift one with the genetics division most of the time, but recently he’d started helping with the facility-maintenance division during shift three due to a shortage of sentinel assistance during the expansion of the new area Jessica was exploring. The system was allocating a lot of hardware to that project, so more humans were required to help. The problem was that the system had struggled to determine the difference between someone adjusting to a new, disorienting routine and someone trying to cause damage.

Depending on your citizenship classification, you were given various types of quarters, from shared suites with anywhere up to six other individuals if you were a C1 all the way up to your own private home with full kitchen and bathroom and plenty of space to spare if you were a C10 or higher. Michael’s C10 and living arrangement with Jess allowed for a full bathroom, but only a partial kitchen and no dining room. The living room had to double as a dining room for special occasions.

Cade was a C5, which meant he had private quarters with an office and work area with a lab. According to the system logs he spent most of his time in the lab.

“Which unit?” Daniel asked as they climbed the steps to the upper level.

Michael looked through the information on his cracked handheld. “Apartment 1045.” He noticed a guy following them. Observing them as they walked. There was something about it, almost as if he was trying to be obvious. Michael stopped watching before the guy would have noticed anything.

“Here we go.” Daniel placed his hand on the screen.

A few moments passed before they heard a response. A face popped up on their handhelds. “How can I help you, officers?”

“You can start by opening the door.”

Cade looked distracted. He looked to the left, then the right before returning to face the camera.

“Fine, but I’m busy. This had better be important.” The feed ended.

“Look at that. He’s in his lab. Who would have guessed?” Daniel said with a smile.

Michael glanced back down the hallway but didn’t see the guy from before.
